Edward Hopper（エドワード・ホッパー）は、都市の中の静けさや孤独を描き、その作品は後の絵画だけではなく、映画や文学など様々なジャンルに大きな影響を与えたアメリカ人の画家です。写真への影響もあるのでしょうか。
Edward Hopper is, as you already know, an American painter whose works influenced much not only on another painters but also all kinds of creators such as filmmakers, writers etc. How about photographers?
この絵が有名ですね。1942年の作品「Nighthawks」。
This is perhaps the most famous work titled Nighthawks, painted in 1942.
1918年のエッチング作品「Night on El Train」。

Walker Evans（ウォーカー・エヴァンス）の『Many are Called』より。コートの下にカメラを隠し、地下鉄の車内で１人の世界にひたる乗客のポートレートを撮ったシリーズです。1938年の作品。

1952年の「Morning Sun」。シンプルな部屋に１人。

郊外の家に１人。
Robert Adams（ロバート・アダムス）の1974年に出版された写真集『New West』より。アダムスは、豊かな暮らしを求め開発された郊外へ移り住むアメリカ人とその環境を写真におさめました。

なんでもないストリートの美しさ。

Stephen Shore（スティーブン・ショア）の『Uncommon Places』より。1974年の作品。
観光地でもランドマークでもない普通の小さな交差点。
Neither a tourist spot nor landmark. Rather boring intersection shot by Stephen Shore.

ホテルの部屋にうつむいた女性。

ホテルの部屋にさみしそうなおじさん。
William Eggleston（ウィリアム・エグルストン）の写真集『William Eggleston’s Guide』より。

*2009年にはアメリカのFraenkel Galleryでホッパーの写真への影響を考察する展覧会「Edward Hopper & Company」が開催されました。取り上げられた写真家は以下の8名：Walker Evans（ウォーカー・エヴァンス）、Robert Frank（ロバートフランク）、Robert Adams（ロバート・アダムス）、Diane Arbus（ダイアン・アーバス）、Harry Callahan（ハリー・キャラハン）、Lee Friedlander（リー・フリードランダー）、Stephen Shore（スティーブン・ショア）、William Eggleston（ウィリアム・エグルストン）。その展覧会の様子はこちら。

昨日はThe Caveにてヘア・アーティストの加茂克也さんの展示の初日でした。
加茂さんのプライベートワークの一部を展示しています。

Yesterday was the opening of the exhibition by Katsuya Kamo, the Hair Artist, at The Cave. Some of his private works are on display.

18：00からはレセプションもあり、たくさんの方々にお越しいただきました。
Many people turned up for the reception from 18:00.
和やかでとてもいいレセプションでした！
It was a very nice and friendly reception.
展示は4月1日までです。本当に本当にdon’t miss itですよ皆さま。

こんにちは。between the booksエディターの井関ケンです。
上の写真は、ドイツの写真家、Bernd and Hilla Becher（ベッヒャー夫妻）の作品です。
ベッヒャー夫妻はこのように、同じ種類の建築物を同じアングルで撮影してグリッド状に並べる手法をずっと続けています。
では、この15枚の写真を撮るのに どれくらいかかったのでしょうか？こういう古い建築物（ワインディング・タワー）をたくさん探すのは大変そうです。同じように写る撮影ポイントを見つけ出さなくてはなりません。さらに、ベッヒャー夫妻は背景を同じように白くするために曇りの日にだけ撮影をします。数ヶ月ではなく数年くらいかかりそうですよね。
答えは30年です。1番古い写真は1965年、1番新しいのは1996年に撮影されました。
Look at above pictures. Yes, I know you know this is a series of work by German photographer couple Bernd and Hilla Becher.
But did you know how long did it take to photograph these fifteen winding towers? It seems difficult to find old architecture like this, to move right place to shoot and moreover, wait until it gets cloudy. It is actually not few months, either few years.
It took 30 years. The oldest picture was shot in 1965, newest in 1996.
赤い四角で囲った写真は1990年代、青い四角で囲った写真は1960年代、囲っていない写真は1970年代に撮影されたものです。言われないと、まったくわかりません。
それにしても、最初に決めたルールで30年間同じように撮り続けるなんてすごいですね。
Photographs highlighted in red were taken in 1990s, similarly, highlighted in blue were taken in 19960s, and plain ones were in 1970s.
Set the rule first and keep on doing the same thing for more than 30 years. Amazing.

ホンマのキノコの写真がドイツのアート雑誌『monopol』と、フランスのファッション誌『PURPLE FASHION magazine』に掲載されました。
Homma’s photobook mushrooms from the forest 2011 has been picked up by a German art magazine monopol and French magazine Purple Fasion.
『monopol』に掲載されたホンマの写真への文章を紹介します。
フクシマ―1年後
放射能汚染地域でのキノコ狩り：日本の写真家、ホンマタカシが目に見えない脅威を写真に撮る
ホンマはいつも被写体とのあいだに独特の距離を持っている。『Tokyo and My Daughter』では、（自分の子供ではない）小さな女の子のポートレート写真と東京の写真を組み合わせ、虚構を作り出した。また『Trails』は狩りで捕えられた動物の血痕が描く抽象的な雪面を写し撮る。『Seeing Itself』という雪山を撮影したシリーズの展示では、来場者に双眼鏡を使って写真を覗き見させるというユニークな手法をとった。
福島の原子力発電所の事故から間もなく、ホンマは原子力発電所の周辺を訪れた。2011年3月11日に日本の歴史上まれにみる巨大地震が引き起こした津波は、東北の海岸部を一瞬にして飲み込んだ。15,000人以上の人々が亡くなり、福島原発ではsuper-GAU（原子力発電に伴う考えられる限り最大級の事故）が起こり、およそ80,000人以上が避難した。しかし、ホンマの写真にこれらの直接的な事実を見ることはない。
大判カメラとガイガーカウンターを手に、ホンマは福島の森を歩きまわってキノコを撮影した。「あの事故から6ヶ月後に、日本の政府は福島県でキノコを収集することと食べることを禁止した」とホンマはこの作品集『mushroom from the forest2011』で言っている。これらのキノコは、白い背景により研究所での研究対象のような印象を受けるが、放射能で汚染されているようには見えない。
これらの写真は、人間を保護し共存する森が発するメッセージを伝えることが目的だが、背景の説明やキャプションはついていない。これは、この大惨事を記憶するとともに、目に見えない危険を警告するためにホンマがとった方法なのである。

代々木八幡にある古本とキノコのお店「リズムアンドブックス」に行ってきました。
Hi, this is Ken Iseki, the Editor at between the books.
I’ve heard there is a nice secondhand book shop, which also sells mushroom goods and books, in Yoyogi-Hachiman (close to Shibuya). So I decided to go check.
オーナーである、鈴木さんご夫婦の興味ある様々なジャンルの本がびっしりと。
The owner Suzuki-san, husband and wife, run the shop. It’s not big but various genres of books are neatly arranged.
レコードもおいてありました。
There are old vinyls too.
ここ、キノココーナーです。
個人的にキノコには興味なかったのですが、だんだんとそのルックスと不思議な生態に魅せられてくるから不思議です。
Here is mushroom section.
I personally hadn’t had any interest in mushroom but I gradually started to get attracted by its peculiar looks and mysterious ecology. Is it infection?
ホンマさんの『その森の子供』発見。
展覧会のレビューが手書きでびっしりと書かれていました。この画像では字が小さいので、読めない方は実際にお店へ足を運んでみてください。
リズムアンドブックス鈴木さん（奥様）にキノコについてお話をうかがいました。
btb: きのこのどういうところが好きなんですか？
鈴木: 昔から形が好きでした。山に登ったりはしないのですが。
btb: 外国の本もたくさんありますね。
鈴木: ヨーロッパは日本よりもキノコが身近だということは知っていたので、ドイツ、チェコ、それからハンガリーに本の買い付けにいってきました。
btb: キノコ好きな方、結構いらっしゃるんですね。
鈴木: 食べるのが好きな人、本を読んだり雑貨を集めるのが好きな人、いろいろです。このお店も2011年8月にオープンしたばかりですが、すでにかなりのキノコ好きな方に来て頂いています。きのこ愛好家のネットワークがあって、あそこにこんな物が売っていたよ、という情報がまわるんです。
btb: まさに菌糸のようなネットワークですね。
I found Homma’s book “mushrooms from the forest 2011″ and exhibition review by Suzuki-san. She wrote it in handwriting on the cardboard.
I questioned Suzuki-san(wife) about mushroom.
btb: How do you like mushroom?
Suzuki: I like the shape. I don’t go to mountains for mushroom though.
btb: There are lots of foreign books about mushroom.
Suzuki: I knew that mushroom is closer to everyday life in Europe than in Japan, so I went to Germany, Hungary and Czech for getting books related to mushroom.
btb: Are there many mushroom lovers?
Suzuki: Certainly. Some people like to eat, others like to read books about it and collect goods. We opened this shop in Aug 2011 but thankfully many people who were looking for mushroom stuff found our shop already. It’s actually because of mushroom lovers network. They share information each other.
btb: It’s like hypha network, isn’t it?

今日もつまらない写真を紹介したいと思います。
マグナムに所属するイギリス人写真家Martin Parr（マーティン・パー）は、つまらない写真をたくさん撮っているんです。

I would like to introduce boring pictures again. Magnum photographer Martin Parr takes a lot of boring pictures.
つまらなそうなカップルを撮ったシリーズ、その名も「Bored Couple（退屈なカップル）」より。
つまらなそうですねー。

壁の広告のハンバーガーを食べるおじさんは楽しそうですが。

つづいては、こちら。
アメリカはオレゴン州の「Boring（つまらない）」という名前の町を撮ったシリーズ。
Martin Parr went to a small town in the States, Boring Oregon and took boring pictures.
酒場の名前のようですが、つまらなそうですね。
This place must be boring.
消防車は面白くても困りますが、つまらないのもどうでしょう。
マーティン・パーは、この他にも、つまらない絵はがきを集めて本にまとめたり*1と、よっぽどつまらないものが好きなんですね。
Fire and Rescue shouldn’t be fun, but..
Parr also collects boring postcards. He really likes boring stuff.

クリス（女）：この写真全然すきじゃないわ。私は、人が写っていたり何か物語りを感じるほうが好き。ルート66の写真？意味分からない。。
インタビュアー：この写真家は何かを意図してると思う？
クリス（女）：そのはずだと思うけど。こんなつまらない写真を趣味でとってるとは思えないわ。ジャック、どう思う？
ジャック（男）：僕には何か訴えるものがあるよ。だってこんな写真見たことないよ。たぶん写真家は。。えーっと、まだはっきりとは分からないけど。。
Chris: I just don’t like this at all; [I prefer] people, pictures, something that tells a story. Route 66, big deal, it doesn’t mean anything.
Interviewer: Do you think the photographer had any intent?
Chris: He must have, for a layout like this. He couldn’t have been doing it for his enjoyment, because they are very dull pictures in my opinion. Jack, what do you think?
Jack: They mean something to me because I’ve never seen them before, I think he’s trying to get at…I’m still working on it…

これは1975年にアメリカで開催された写真展「ニュー・トポグラフィクス：人工的風景の写真」の会場で、展示を見に来ていた20代のカップルへ行ったインタビューの一部です。
ニュー・トポグラフィクス展は、今では写真史上の重要な展覧会と位置づけられていますが、当時、しかもふらっと立ち寄った若いカップルには理解し難いものだったようですね。
それでは出展された写真をみてみましょう。
This conversation was recorded at the exhibition “New Topographics – Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape” held at George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, in 1975. They are young couple in their twenties. Jack is a man and Chris is his girlfriend or wife.
It is now regarded as an important exhibition in the history of photography and has influenced many photographers later on. But, at that time, especially for a young couple, it was hardly understandable.
Let’s take a look at the boring pictures.

まずは、写真家が画家の描いたものを撮影したり、絵画からの構図を引用した作品を集めてみました。
Many photographers actually quote the composition from the paintings and photograph painter’s subjects. Here are some examples.
アメリカ人写真家のStephen Shore（スティーブン・ショア）は、クロード・モネが愛し、たくさんの作品を描いたことで有名な、ジヴェルニーの庭園を写真に撮り、1冊の写真集をつくりました*1。
Stephen Shore photographed the gardens of Giverny that Claude Monet loved and painted in many of his works.

これは一目瞭然ですね。
イギリス人写真家のTom Hunter（トム・ハンター）*2は、フェルメールの「窓辺で手紙を読む女」の構図をまねて、左の写真を撮りました。ベッドの上には、果物ではなくて赤ちゃんが寝ています。
English photographer Tom Hunter’s “Persons Unknown” series. He quoted the composition from Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Baby is sleeping on the bed in the photograph instead of fruits.
こちらはアメリカのリアリズム絵画の巨匠、Andrew Wyeth（アンドリュー・ワイエス）の絵。
This is American painter Andrew Wyeth’s painting.
同じくアメリカ人であるJames Welling（ジェームズ・ウェリング）は、ワイエスの絵画に描かれたものを現地で撮影しています。ちょうど今、Wako Works of Artでこのシリーズの展示が行われていますね*3。
James Welling, also an American artist, photographed what Wyeth painted.
つづいて、鈴木理策さん写真集『Mont Sainte Victoire』*4からの一枚。
フランス南部にあるサント･ヴィクトワール山は、晩年のセザンヌが、絵画の題材に選んだことで有名です。鈴木理策さんはその山を訪ね、1冊の写真集にまとめました。
Japanese photographer Risaku Suzuki decided to chase after Paul Cézanne’s favorite mountain Mont Sainte Victoire in southern France.
セザンヌの描いたサント･ヴィクトワール山。
This is Paul Cézanne’s painting.
最後はこちら。
カナダ人アーティスト、Jeff Wall（ジェフ・ウォール）の作品。なんと浮世絵から構図を拝借しているんです。
Jeff Wall quoted the composition from Ukiyoe. The title is “after Hokusai”.
引用元はこの絵。葛飾北斎 冨嶽三十六景より《駿州江尻》です。

みなさまこんにちは！
２月６日より銀座のガーディアン・ガーデンにて、第４回写真「１_WALL」グランプリ
畑直幸さんの展覧会「Pelletron new no.4」が始まりました。
オープニングにはたくさんの人が来場されていました。
Hi, everyone!
At Guardian Garden gallery in Ginza, Naoyuki Hata, who won the first prize of 1_WALL photography contest, just started his solo exhibition “Pelletron new no.4″. 1_WALL is one of the most popular photography contest for young artists. It was previously named “Hitotsubo-Ten”, which 6 nominees can use Hitotsubo(1.8m x 1.8m) on the wall. The winner can hold an solo exhibition in one year. This contest has so far produced Rinko Kawauchi and many other renowned photographers.
Here are some photos from the opening night. Hata is the one wearing light blue jacket.
The exhibition will last until Feb 23. Don’t miss it if you are in Tokyo!
btb : オランダで勉強が忙しい中、準備が大変だったかと思いますが、納得のいく展示はできましたか？
畑 : はい。プリントはギャラリーのスケールモデルをオランダでも作っていたので、サイズ感が掴めていたのが良かったです。
おかげで当日は物の配置に集中することができて良かったですね。初めての事が多かったのですが、とてもいい経験をさせてもらえました。
btb : 久しぶりの東京はいかがですか？
畑 : 自分の中で戸惑う事が多いなと思いました。一番は帰って来たー。より、日本に来た！とゆう感覚になったのが不思議でした。
当たり前ですが、全部日本語で楽だなーと思う反面、日本語だけで楽してたらダメだなーとゆう焦りを感じるのも変な感じでした。
展示は２月２３日(木)までです！みなさまぜひ見に行ってください！
