In “Picture & Picture” series, I would like to explore the relation between photograph and painting.

Edward Hopper（エドワード・ホッパー）は、都市の中の静けさや孤独を描き、その作品は後の絵画だけではなく、映画や文学など様々なジャンルに大きな影響を与えたアメリカ人の画家です。写真への影響もあるのでしょうか。
Edward Hopper is, as you already know, an American painter whose works influenced much not only on another painters but also all kinds of creators such as filmmakers, writers etc. How about photographers?
この絵が有名ですね。1942年の作品「Nighthawks」。
This is perhaps the most famous work titled Nighthawks, painted in 1942.
1918年のエッチング作品「Night on El Train」。

Walker Evans（ウォーカー・エヴァンス）の『Many are Called』より。コートの下にカメラを隠し、地下鉄の車内で１人の世界にひたる乗客のポートレートを撮ったシリーズです。1938年の作品。

1952年の「Morning Sun」。シンプルな部屋に１人。

郊外の家に１人。
Robert Adams（ロバート・アダムス）の1974年に出版された写真集『New West』より。アダムスは、豊かな暮らしを求め開発された郊外へ移り住むアメリカ人とその環境を写真におさめました。

なんでもないストリートの美しさ。
Beauty in ordinary street.
Stephen Shore（スティーブン・ショア）の『Uncommon Places』より。1974年の作品。
観光地でもランドマークでもない普通の小さな交差点。
Neither a tourist spot nor landmark. Rather boring intersection shot by Stephen Shore.
「Hotel Room」1931年
ホテルの部屋にうつむいた女性。

William Eggleston（ウィリアム・エグルストン）の写真集『William Eggleston’s Guide』より。

*2009年にはアメリカのFraenkel Galleryでホッパーの写真への影響を考察する展覧会「Edward Hopper & Company」が開催されました。取り上げられた写真家は以下の8名：Walker Evans（ウォーカー・エヴァンス）、Robert Frank（ロバートフランク）、Robert Adams（ロバート・アダムス）、Diane Arbus（ダイアン・アーバス）、Harry Callahan（ハリー・キャラハン）、Lee Friedlander（リー・フリードランダー）、Stephen Shore（スティーブン・ショア）、William Eggleston（ウィリアム・エグルストン）。その展覧会の様子はこちら。
